The Pre-Grammar Stage focuses on the young child’s natural ability to memorize and learn large quantities of information. Students learn about God being Lord of all creation, including all subjects. The Grammar Stage stresses knowledge and focuses on learning facts--who, what, when, and where. Chants and songs, rhyming and storytelling, make it easier to learn math facts, history dates, grammar rules, catechisms, and Latin vocabulary. Academic studies focus on language with an emphasis on writing skills, and mathematics with a continuation of skill-specific drill and memory work. Experiential learning enhances the child’s understanding through leaf and insect collections as well as re-enacting historical events. Each year, the student builds on the knowledge from previous years, expanding the storehouse of facts, and strengthening the foundation for future learning.

With the developing capacity for abstract thought, students learn formal and informal logic to acquire the discerning thinking skills to recognize sound and false reasoning.
